In-Store Pickup app
This project was a redesign of an existing internal website, for store associates to use in picking web orders, into a mobile web app.
Requirements
This project started its life as a website old enough to be using HTML tables for layout. Our directive was to transform this website into not only a good looking but also more efficient mobile app. The current site could only be used in a backroom where the associate’s PC is located; taking more time to go between the backroom and the sales floor to pick items.
Our stakeholders were the management in charge of these operations. The end users were the store associates.
Ideation Sketches
The beginning of the project focused on what information to keep and what information to discard from the original website. The next step was deciding how to organize all of the content that was contained on each page, especially the Orders List page and the Details View page.
Mockups/Prototypes
As iterations were presented to the stakeholders, ideas were refined and the user interface morphed with added information of what the end users did in their current workflow.
I held discussions with developers throughout the mockup and prototyping phase to talk through confusing interactions and make sure we were all on the same page.
Final Prototype & Workflow
After a few iterations, the final design was agreed upon and the project was handed off to the developers. During the building phase, I still worked closely with the developers to ensure that everyone understood the design in style and layout.
I focused on information design, with so much needing to be seen by the end users, as well as style aspects like color coordination to group items together.
Outcome …
The project ran through QA testing and has been implemented successfully by the end users. The new design has allowed store associates to speed up their order picking process. The users are being asked now for their feedback on how to improve and the project is heading into version two. This will add features to help associates to pick items even faster by location on the sales floor.
